03:26 am - Saturday reminder

Just reminding folks that this Saturday would be a great chance to come see Ar éigean Gael play it's first full public performances:

2:00pm at The Grove Irish Pub
395 Jacks Run Rd, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15202

8:00pm at Carrick Eagles
2538 Brownsville Rd, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15210

I'd love to see some familiar faces in the audience. The first venue, as I understand it, should be about as family friendly as any Pub-type place can be on St. Patrick's Day weekend.

09:45 pm - Upcoming Performances

Ar éigean Gael is now booked for two performances on Saturday, March 15:

2:00pm at The Grove Irish Pub
395 Jacks Run Rd, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15202

8:00pm at Carrick Eagles
2538 Brownsville Rd, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15210

For those with kids, The Grove should be friendly (restaurant/pub); the Eagles club on the other hand is definitely a over-21-only bar.

We should have a few demo recordings up soon as well.

10:28 pm - Official Announcment/Upcoming Events

I'd been holding out for some actual recordings to be finished, but it looks like scheduling has forced my hand early.

Over the past year, I've been practicing with a Celtic Folk group Ar éigean Gael.

We're set for our first full performance on March 15 (details are at the site above, and I'll closer to the date as well), but we've got our first actual appearance in front of an audience this Saturday:

Sixth Presbyterian Church Talent Show
Forbes Ave and Murray Ave in Squirrel Hill
Saturday, February 2, 2008, 7 PM - ~8:30 PM
$10 goes to support the Youth Group's upcoming Summer Trip to Nicaragua

Any who are interested are welcome to attend, there lot of great performances lined up.

10:39 pm - The Progressive Mr. Smith

In the wilds of the internet, it's almost trivial to find someone who supports your views. But it's a rare and exciting moment to discover your side of an argument clearly supported by someone who the other side rates as an authority.

The more well off the state has enabled you to become, the proportionally more you owe it in repayment; in the words of Adam Smith himself: )

12:59 am - Sketching

Google SketchUp is fun; I can't much compare it to other CAD programs, but I'm getting the hang of many of it's features.

My mom gave me a king sized mattress. Foam, so no boxspring. This combination will end up being very frustrating in the long term without finding some way to elevate it a bit.

Let's combine these two thoughts and a bit of time )

10:29 am - Practical crafts

Finding that it would be more and more useful to have a C tin whistle on hand, I dug around for reviews and prices. Along the way I was pointed to this site which suits my hands-on temperament in just about every way.

A trip to Lowes, and few hours of tinkering (and even a little blood- he warns of the left thumb, so I had to balance the load with my right) I had something to show for my efforts )

I'll definitely be able to do better next time, now that experience has filled in the blanks in the instructions, but it works, and I think it's even decently in tune.

01:39 am - Pondering

I can't sleep, so instead it'll etch to text something that's been buzzing in my head for a while- not entirely my own inspiration, but I like it enough that I wonder how workable it is:

02:40 am - Benchmark

Shorts with a 36" waist fit with a little room to spare. Still need to get out there to figure out my full set of measurements, but there's the baseline.

No wonder why my 46" pants fit like a tent.

I'm can probably drop another size or two, but I can also feel a bit more comfortable about starting to replace some of my clothes at this point.

02:32 pm - Weight report

Rather than flooding people with a bunch of numbers, here's a look at the three most interesting data sets, graphed point by point and with a flat two week moving average:

Cut for images )

It's pretty obvious where winter break and holiday food pushed back against my overall progress, but not significantly. I'm definitely happy to see that the water line keeps going up and up.

Rough overall goals-
Weight: ~210 (Current- ~250)
Fat: ~20% (Current- ~26%)
Water: ~70% (Current- ~55%)

Subject to revision when I see where I'm really going, but they at least give me something to shoot for.

(Raw data is available for anyone who actually wants to see it or do more fun stuff with it- getting Excel to properly label the graphs and produce the moving averages was, at best, annoying.)

05:09 pm - Packing up

If anyone finds them selves with some spare time tonight and would be interested in helping me pack (or just keeping me focused and entertained while I pack) give me a call at (412)381-7549 (last chance to use that number- no way will it transfer out to Penn Hills) or just drop by 243 Moore Ave. Company would be very welcome.

(Cats are inhabiting this house, as a warning to the allergic; they're staying here when we leave, though)

02:49 pm - Context

I'm filling out the Course Evaluation for my Solfege class, and being mildly amused at how rough a fit most of the questions are, then I hit this one:

"developed skills in expressing yourself orally (through class or group discussions, presentations, etc.)."

I'd hope so.

But, yeah, this was designed with a totally different type of course in mind.

Heavens knows I probably need it.

If anyone would like to take a look at my resume and give advice on how to improve it, it's here:

(MS Word format. If you'd like to see it but need a different format, let me know and I should be able to work something out.)

(Text format. Needs more reformatting work, for certain.)

10:17 am - I win the holiday

The record for the month will show that I was able to not only eat to my satisfaction and have some of everything offered this Thanksgiving, but do it in such a way that I in fact lost weight in the process.

I didn't make 250 yet, but I should easily be able to make it by the end of the month.

09:34 am - Cold medicine

A while back, while waiting for a prescription to be filled, I noticed an assortment of cold medicines on Eckerd's clearance shelf. Figuring it couldn't hurt to have a little extra on hand I grabbed a few things - some NyQuil/DayQuil equivalent stuff, some kids stuff, and a bottle of something called "Buckley's" Something about the box suggested something a little old fashioned about it. I just looked far enough to see that it had a decongestant and a cough suppressant in it.

What I didn't notice is that those are just taken offerings. The second "inactive" ingredient is camphor. Smelling it is enough to scare your body into being healthy, never mind tasting it.

Old fashioned indeed. I think the drugs in it are doing their job. I'm not sure though because it's hard to feel exactly where my head begins and ends at the moment.

Whee.

01:30 pm - Weekly Weight Log (x2)

Just haven't found the time to transcribe this till now, so we're going to have the last two weeks of data.

On a more general note- I discovered last weekend that losing 45lbs has definitely dropped my alcohol tolerance significantly. A good thing overall, but a bit surprising when it sneaks up on you. Walking in heels feels like dancing when you're really light-headed.

Here're the numbers. )
A good trend, still, ignoring the little spikes. Let's see if I can be sitting on 250 in time for Thanksgiving. There definitely seems to be a consistent improvement in my water% (which is supposed to get higher as you lose weight) and I'm pretty solidly in the 27.x range for fat now.

I'm definitely on a monor pleateau for overall wieght, but I should be able to push through it before too long.

12:36 pm - Weekly Weight Log

Sunday was really busy, but here we go )

So- end of October, 260lbs. I'm still keeping 10/month, even when the fits and starts that it actually moves with make me think I'm going to start slowing down. Shaved nearly 1% off the body fat value as well, which is good progress to see as well.

I've been managing to drink 3 liters of water ever day at work, but I'm not so good about it on the weekends yet, that'll probably help.

Many thanks to the people this weekend who commented on my overall loss. It really feels good to hear such.

If I keep the pace, it would mean that my rough half way point is only about a month off. Still a long way to go, but wow.

Feeling out of sorts, appetite out of control, depressed, unable to focus, listless; searching for deep solutions is pointless if I ignore the fact that that's exactly how I feel when coming down with a cold.

I'd been doing well enough that I'd forgotten how it goes.

05:44 pm - Blowing the schedule.

I just folded my hands together with fingers laced and realized that it felt very different than I'm used to. I looked at my hands held flat and could see gaps between them. My fingers are clearly narrower- they definitely dip inward between the knuckles now.

Tuedsay morning I dropped below 270 after swimming. My low, after swimming today was 266. I was shooting for 270 by the end of October. I know it was conservative, but didn't think I'd come in a whole month early...

It's looking like I may even be in the 250's by that date. That's around or better than 10lbs/month. I need to keep a good awareness of how I'm feeling overall to be sure that I'm not dropping too quickly, as much as the prospect of getting to a point that I want to stabilize more quickly appeals to me.

09:53 pm - Numbers

I gave blood today, double red is a little easier to deal with the second time around.

But, I was mostly looking forward to some of the extra information that comes with the checkup: )
05-24-06: 160/92
09-21-06: 122/86

It's still a little high, but that's a pretty solid improvement. We'll see what happens when they come calling again in Dec/Jan.

06:49 pm - In Oregon

After a series of travel realted headaches, we're finally safely in Oregon, saying with my grandmother in Eugene this week, then with my aunt in Portland from Sunday evening to Tuesday evening.

Most of are schedule is somewhat vague at the moment- there's some hope to get down to Roseburg to visit place that parts of my family used to live, and maybe continue to Crater Lake, and definitely a trip out to the coast at some point.

The things we're sure of though, are:
A trip to http://www.enchantedforest.com Saturday afternoon. (If you're in range and available I'd be happy to make arrangements to meet up there and hang out a bit

A visit to The Peace Memorial Park in Portland when we're there next week.
